Russia has attacked the capital of Ukraine with multiple missiles. There are dead and injured. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy announced that his country wants to recapture the cities occupied by Russia.

The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was fired at by several rockets from Russia on Sunday morning. “Several explosions in Shevchenkivskyi district,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram on the 122nd day of the Russian invasion. “Ambulance and paramedics are on site. Rescue and evacuation of residents in two buildings is underway.” AFP journalists heard four detonations near the city center. Half an hour earlier, the city’s air raid sirens had sounded the alarm.

A rocket hit a nine-story apartment building, Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, wrote in the Telegram news service. Another rocket fell on the premises of a kindergarten in the Shevchenko district. According to the civil defense, at least one person was injured in the house. Klitschko reported two injured and others still stuck under rubble. The rescue and extinguishing work continued in the morning.

Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko wrote that Russian troops fired a total of 14 rockets at Kyiv and the surrounding area in the morning hours. This could not be checked at first.

The capital has only occasionally been the target of Russian attacks in recent weeks, and the Russian military is currently concentrating primarily on the east of the country. Kyiv was last shelled in early June. While the Ukrainian side spoke of damaged railway infrastructure at the time, Moscow reported the targeted destruction of tanks freshly delivered from abroad.

Ukraine wants to recapture all cities

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that his country wants to recapture the cities seized by Russia – Sieverodonetsk, Donetsk and Luhansk. Melitopol and Mariupol have not been forgotten either, Zelenskyj said in his evening video address on Saturday. “All other cities of Ukraine temporarily occupied will be Ukrainian.” Russia had just announced the capture of Sievjerodonetsk.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine was hit by 45 Russian missiles within half a day on Saturday. “They are further confirmation of our position that sanctions against Russia are not enough.” His country needs more military help.

Ukraine is in a morally and emotionally difficult phase of the war. “We understand that we can still protect the state,” said the head of state. However, he does not know how great the losses and efforts will be until victory is on the horizon.

Russia has now been at war with Ukraine for more than four months.
