Irma Garcia was one of the elementary school teachers who were shot in Uvalde. Her husband Joe died two days after her. Thanks to an extremely successful fundraising campaign, at least the worries of her four children are lessened.

The story of Irma and Joe Garcia is probably one of the most tragic of the school massacre in Uvalde, Texas. Two days after the elementary school teacher was shot, her husband collapsed and also died. A fundraising campaign on “Gofundme.com” aimed to raise $10,000 for her four children – and raised $2,691,310 within four days (as of May 30, 11:06 a.m. CEST). As NBC reports, a cousin of the elementary school teacher who was shot started the campaign. One of her nephews also raised more than $500,000 before the two campaigns were eventually merged. Major US media such as “CNN” or the “Washington Post” had reported on the fundraiser after the couple’s death had also made international headlines.

“Irma was a wife, a mother of 4, a cousin, a sister, a daughter, an aunt and a wonderful human being. She would literally do anything for anyone……no questions asked. She loved the school kids her class and died trying to protect her. Please donate whatever you can to help her family,” the cousin of the slain teacher wrote in the original appeal for donations.

Family of Uvalde victims thanks

On Sunday she thanked all the people who donated: “I want to thank all the donors worldwide who have donated to these wonderful children. The prayers, love and support you have sent is so much appreciated and needed while they continue her journey through life without her mother and father.” The donation page does not say how long the fundraiser will continue.
