He had to follow in big footsteps: Andrea Morricone wants to lead a worldwide concert series in honor of his father Ennio Morricone from November. The 57-year-old knew his calling early on.

The son of the famous film music composer Ennio Morricone (“Play me the song of death”) didn’t have to think long as a teenager to know what he wanted to be when he grew up.

“One day I was alone in the studio and I said: I would like to be able to write a musical theme one day,” said Andrea Morricone of the German Press Agency in Rome. From November, the 57-year-old Italian wants to lead a worldwide concert series in honor of his father as chief conductor. In it, the songs of Ennio Morricone are played to film excerpts from well-known western classics.

Morricone tour is also coming to Germany

“We are motivated and proud to carry this into the world because we know the value of this music,” said Morricone in the apartment right on the central Piazza Venezia, where his father once composed music. The tour should also stop in Berlin and Frankfurt am Main. He always enjoys working with the orchestra in Berlin, Morricone explained.

Father and son began composing music for the cinema together at an early age. They wrote the film music (“The Love Theme”) for the Italian film “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” from 1988 and received the British Academy Film Award in the 1991 category for best film music.

About the father: “Secret, mysterious and ironic”

Ennio Morricone died on July 6, 2020 at the age of 91 after breaking his femoral neck. The musical genius was considered one of the most important composers for the film. According to Andrea Morricone, his father was strict. “He was a very closed, mysterious, sometimes spiritual and ironic person.” At lunch he sometimes didn’t say a word. Instead, his mother provided the table talk.

On stage, Morricone says he feels his father is still with him. «My father’s music is my real home. There is a very strong relationship between me and my father because I know his music so well.”
