Sometimes shrill, sometimes soft: the British band Coldplay plays a thrilling stadium show in Frankfurt. Singer Chris Martin surprises with a few words in Hessian and a German song text.
A brightly colored light show, a roaring audience and numerous hits: Coldplay made a stop in Germany as part of their world tour. The British musicians delighted their fans in Frankfurt with a spectacular stadium show on Saturday evening.
Right from the start, the first pink flares flew into the evening sky. After that, it all happened in quick succession: the quartet, founded in 1996 and led by singer Chris Martin, played numerous hits from their career, from “Yellow” to “The Scientist” to “Fix You” and “Viva la Vida”.
From indie rock to radio pop
The current tour is named after the most recent, meanwhile ninth, studio album “Music Of The Spheres”, which of course was also featured. After the melancholic ballads and the soft pop rock, with which Coldplay once conquered the music world, the new songs come along more with a boy band sound. Since the late 2000s, Coldplay, which is now one of the most successful pop groups in the world, has increasingly commercialized their style – away from melancholic indie rock to sometimes shallow radio pop.
In Frankfurt, Coldplay delivered a broad spectrum. Sometimes there was a shrill, colorful laser show, then calmer piano songs again. The spectators were equipped with LED wristbands, which were centrally controlled and transformed the sold-out stadium into a blue-pink sea of lights for the current hit “My Universe”. The band emphasized that the bands were made from plant-based, compostable materials. In any case, Coldplay declared that they wanted to make their tour as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. They want to use renewable energies whenever possible or pay ten percent of the income to a fund for environmentally and socially aware purposes.
Hessian greeting and a German song
In the beginning, the singer surprised with the Hessian greeting “Ei Gude, eh?” and shortly before the end the band even played a German-language version of «Magic». A highlight was certainly “A Sky Full of Stars”. For this title, Chris Martin called on the audience to pack away any cell phones or cameras.
“Playing live and connecting with the fans is ultimately why we exist as a band,” the musicians explained on the occasion of the tour. And you don’t have to be a fan of the band to appreciate that they put on a truly immersive show in Frankfurt.
Coldplay wanted to perform twice more in the Main metropolis in the coming days and will be guesting a little later on three evenings in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Then it goes to other European cities and then to South America. At the end of October and beginning of November, for example, they play ten times in the “El Monumental” stadium in Buenos Aires.
