In a long essay, the Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, who is critical of the regime, took a stand against Moscow’s war of aggression in Ukraine, which began three months ago.
«Soldiers of my country invaded a foreign country and began to destroy it. to kill people. Destroying houses,” Serebrennikov (52) wrote on Tuesday on his Telegram channel. The opposition portal «Medusa» in Riga also published the text.
The war forces everyone to live in fear and hatred – the witnesses, the participants, the victims, “even those who are against it”. Whoever starts a war always loses. Anyone who rapes, kills or tortures peaceful people is a war criminal for whom there should be no sympathy. The Russian state has been “man-eating” in many epochs, Serebrennikov wrote. Culture, on the other hand, was always important to what was not important to the state – “sympathy for the fallen”.
The director recently presented his film “Tchaikovsky’s Wife” at the Cannes Festival. There, too, he spoke out against the war. However, he was criticized for calling for the oligarch Roman Abramovich, who is close to the Kremlin, to be exempted from sanctions.
