The SPD politician told the Funke media group that he would not interfere in the negotiations. “But I’ll say openly that decent wages must also help cushion price developments here in the country.” The strongest inflation since the early 1980s is not the result of excessive wage demands, but of energy prices and disruptions in supply chains.

In April, consumer prices rose 7.4 percent year-on-year. The Federal Statistical Office intends to publish the figures for May on Monday. Experts assume that the inflation rate has accelerated to 7.6 percent.
