The three-time Olympic champion Michael Jung subsequently lost his victory in the eventing competition at the CHIO in Aachen due to a jury decision. Nevertheless, there was a German success through Sandra Auffarth.

The former world champion from Ganderkesee initially improved to second place behind Jung and his top horse Chipmunk in cross-country riding on Viamant Du Matz. After the judges, after evaluating videos, decided that the exceptional rider had not overcome an obstacle correctly and received 15 penalty points for it, the 35-year-old even slipped all the way to the front.

“If I’m second behind Michael after a fair decision, I’ll be happy. If I’m in front of him after a fair decision, I’m even happier,” she said.

Young only eighth – in the team in second place

The 39-year-old boy had to settle for eighth place. Before the jury’s verdict, the rider from Horb had once again dominated the competition. Even after dressage and jumping, he and his 14-year-old gelding were in the lead and safely crossed the course – except for one obstacle. Unlike usual, the test in Aachen ends with the cross-country ride instead of the jumping.

In the team ranking, the German team took second place behind the British. For the team competition, Jung relied on Kilcandra, who was only nine years old. He missed an obstacle with the stallion and received 20 penalty points in addition to the time penalties. In addition to Jung and Auffarth, the quartet also included Olympic champion Julia Krajewski from Warendorf with her gold horse Amande de B’Néville and Ingrid Klimke with Siena.

The 54-year-old from Münster was the worst placed of the team after two by-runners and 40 penalty points with her mare in 28th place. The expanded squad for the World Championships in September in Pratoni del Vivaro in Italy will be named after the CHIO in Aachen. The final team will be nominated later.
