The three-time Olympic champion Michael Jung has won the eventing competition at the CHIO in Aachen for the third time.

The exceptional rider stayed in front on Chipmunk after the cross-country ride. After dressage and jumping, the duo was already in the lead. Jung had thought of the test more as training for his top horse towards the World Championships and was surprised at the success.

Former world champion Sandra Auffarth improved to second place on Viamant Du Matz and made the German double success perfect. Unlike usual, the test in Aachen ends with the cross-country ride instead of the jumping.

German team in second place

In the team ranking, the German team took second place behind the British. For the team competition, Jung relied on his only nine-year-old stallion, Kilcandra. The 39-year-old from Horb missed an obstacle with the inexperienced horse and received 20 additional penalty points in addition to the time errors. In addition to Jung and Auffarth, the quartet also included Olympic champion Julia Krajewski from Warendorf with her gold horse Amande de B’Néville and Ingrid Klimke from Münster with Siena. The 54-year-old from Münster was the worst placed of the team after two by-runners and 40 penalty points with her mare in 28th place.

The expanded squad for the World Championships in September in Pratoni del Vivaro in Italy will be named after the CHIO in Aachen. The final team will be nominated later.

None of the riders stayed on the demanding cross-country course in the Soers in the prescribed time. Best was the Australian Andrew Hoy on Vassily de Lassos, who finished third in the final standings. Briton Rosalind Canter’s horse Allstar had to be taken to a veterinary clinic. One leg hit an obstacle.
