The Bavarian Forest National Park was hit by a short, violent storm on Saturday evening. Numerous trees fell down. Therefore, parts of the park are closed until Tuesday.

The storms on the Pentecost weekend left considerable damage in the Bavarian Forest National Park. A short and violent storm on Saturday evening brought down several trees. The animal outdoor area in Neuschönau (Freyung-Grafenau district) is affected. That is why the area should remain closed on Pentecost Sunday and Monday, the national park administration announced. Several trees had fallen on the hiking trails and broken branches hung in the treetops. The security on the paths is no longer given. Animal enclosures were not damaged.

The treetop path in the Lusen National Park Center was also temporarily closed after the storm. “Our team is already clearing the paths and assessing the damage,” said Stefan Vießmann, head of the Lusen service center, on Sunday morning. With a road network of more than ten kilometers in length, however, this takes some time.

Fallen trees in the Bavarian Forest

The outdoor animal area in the Falkenstein National Park Center near Lindberg (Regen district) was not damaged and is still open. Visitors should avoid the area between Rachel and Siebensteinkopf if possible. Due to the many fallen trees, many paths are difficult or even unusable. In addition, there is an increased risk potential from possibly falling trees and falling branches, which is why staying in the forest should be avoided if possible.

Even on Whit Monday, the weather in southern Germany is still unstable. According to the German Weather Service, there should be individual thunderstorms in Franconia in the afternoon, especially near the Alps in the late afternoon. Heavy rain and gusts of around 60 km/h are to be expected locally. During the night of Tuesday, thunderstorms continued in the Alps and storms could also occur in other regions of Bavaria. Heavy rainfall is again expected on the eastern edge of the Alps and in the Bavarian Forest. From Wednesday the thunderstorms calm down, but it remains changeable in Bavaria with local rainfall and showers.
