Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has caused a stir in the US state of Florida. First there were various speeches, then a tour of a special kind.
After his first meeting with US President Joe Biden, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro drove through the US city of Orlando with hundreds of supporters on a motorcycle.
The South American country’s right-wing populist president led Saturday’s tour, which saw many participants dressed in Brazilian colors, according to videos. In Brazil, too, Bolsonaro repeatedly organizes motorcycle parades with numerous supporters.
Speeches to cheering supporters
He had come to the city in the state of Florida to open a vice consulate. Many Brazilians live in the area. Bolsonaro, whose middle name is Messiah, also gave a speech at an evangelical church in the Brazilian community.
In the parking lot of the church, he gave another speech to cheering supporters – according to a report in the newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo”, around 2,000 people had gathered. From there, around 350 motorcyclists took part in the 40-minute tour. In addition to the police, the Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the US President, also ensured security.
Conversation between Bolsonaro and Biden
Bolsonaro had previously attended the America Summit in Los Angeles and met with Biden on the sidelines on Thursday. The heads of state of America’s most populous countries spoke, among other things, about the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest and the upcoming presidential elections in Brazil in October. Bolsonaro is in polls behind left-wing ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Like Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump in the US presidential election two years ago, he casts doubts about the legality of the vote in advance.
