The Tesla boss is not a friend of the home office. Now Musk is even threatening his employees with being thrown out: Anyone who doesn’t come to the office 40 hours a week has to go.

Tesla boss Elon Musk does not think much of the home office and, according to media reports, has given his employees an ultimatum to return to their offices.

Everyone must spend at least 40 hours a week at work or leave Tesla, according to an online leaked email to the employees, the authenticity of which was confirmed by the financial service Bloomberg, among others. He will approve possible exceptions personally.

Musk himself did not deny the authenticity of the email in an exchange on Twitter. When asked what he would say to those who think working from the office is an outdated concept, he wrote back: “They should pretend to work somewhere else.”

Attitude «like from the 1950s»

The co-founder and boss of the Australian software company Atlassian, Scott Farquhar, then wrote on Twitter that the setting looked “like something from the 1950s”. He approached dissatisfied Tesla employees with an offer to check open positions at Atlassian because the company could work from anywhere.

Even at the height of the Corona crisis, the Tesla boss was a critic of the restrictions that also temporarily shut down Tesla’s main plant near San Francisco. At the time, he called the protective measures “fascist”, among other things. Tech companies are currently taking different courses when it comes to reducing corona measures. Some continue to let employees work from anywhere, like Atlassian. On the other hand, Apple, for example, has plans to bring them back to the offices for at least a few days a week – but according to media reports, it initially postponed this further in view of the current corona situation.
