New revelations from a data leak illustrate the extent of the persecution and mass detentions in northwest China’s Xinjiang region, according to media reports.
An international media network, which includes the news magazine Der Spiegel, Bayerische Rundfunk, the British BBC, USA Today and the newspaper Le Monde, reported on the Xinjiang Police Files on Tuesday.
The publication coincides with the ongoing visit to China by UN human rights commissioner Michelle Bachelet, who also plans to visit Xinjiang. The documents, thousands of photos and official speeches offer a rare glimpse into the re-education camps and the treatment of Uyghurs and other minorities, as well as the hard line of Chinese rule, according to media reports.
According to this information, the information contradicts official Chinese statements that the camps are “further training facilities” that are attended voluntarily. According to the reports, the data material had been leaked to the researcher Adrian Zenz, who works at the Washington “Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation” and has previously documented the persecution in Xinjiang with other publications.
