Energy crisis and economic crisis increase the pressure on Italy. Commentator and former editor-in-chief Ezio Mauro fears that the mood in Italy is changing – and that calls for sanctions to be lifted and Russia’s demands to give way are growing louder.

Like Germany, Italy has become dependent on Russian gas. The energy company ENI has now opened an account in rubles – without resistance from Brussels. Is Europe still prepared to keep the sanctions in place? We are just now realizing that the supply crisis is becoming a political problem. Firstly, we are realizing that we have to take a common line within the EU, because the effect of the sanctions depends on whether they are wanted and supported by all member states. This is not a bureaucratic measure.
