For Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi, newly crowned Champions League winners Real Madrid have not been the best team in this year’s premier class. The Argentine revealed this in an interview with TyC Sports. “It’s not always the best who wins,” he said when asked about Real’s triumph.
“Without wanting to belittle it, because they won the Champions League, Real Madrid weren’t the best team in the Champions League – and yet they beat everyone,” said Messi.
Messi sees Benzema ahead at the Ballon d’Or
Among other things, Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, when Messi himself missed a penalty in Paris’ 1-0 win in the first leg. In the return, Karim Benzema almost single-handedly turned the game around with three goals from a 1-0 deficit to see Real Madrid progress.
Not only this performance of the French striker impressed Messi in the past season. Benzema is considered by many experts to be the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or – and Messi also sees the Real striker in front. “There’s no doubt about it,” he said.
“Benzema had a spectacular year and topped it off by winning the Champions League,” said Messi. “He was the deciding man in all the knockout rounds so there’s no doubt who will win the Ballon d’Or this year,” he added.
