The sale of the new 9-euro tickets for local transport has already started and should generate additional demand. The railways are increasing their capacities for the holidays.

Deutsche Bahn is expanding its capacities in order to cope with a possible rush of customers on the upcoming public holidays.

As the company announced on Saturday, it is using 50 special long-distance trains around the long weekends on Ascension Day (May 26), Pentecost (June 5/6) and Corpus Christi (June 16). These are to be used primarily on high-demand connections such as between Hamburg and Munich or between North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin. According to the information, the additional trains can already be booked.

“Fortunately, the demand for long-distance traffic on Deutsche Bahn is increasing again, especially on the long holiday weekends of Ascension Day, Pentecost and Corpus Christi,” said railway spokesman Achim Stauss. “We expect quite full trains.”

In summer, buses and trains in Germany become drastically cheaper. On Friday, the Federal Council cleared the way for 9-euro monthly tickets in June, July and August, which are valid everywhere in local and regional transport. This means that nationwide sales at the railways and other providers can start this Monday, in some places it is already running.

However, it remains to be seen how great the desire to change is among motorists. Because at the same time there is a cost brake when refueling, which the Federal Council allowed to happen.
