The cult series “How I Met Your Mother” is one of the biggest sitcom successes. Now there is a modern offshoot that has few points of contact with the original and is much more diverse.

Hilary Duff is one of Hollywood’s most popular young stars. With the Disney series “Lizzie McGuire” and films like “A Cinderella Story”, the actress became one of the most popular faces in the entertainment industry.

The 34-year-old is now the focus of the streaming series “How I Met Your Father”, spin-off of the cult sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” from the noughties and ten years.

In the new Disney spin-off, Sophie tells her son how she met his father. Similar to the original series, the plot revolves around the lives and loves of a group of New York friends in their late twenties. However, it is about a completely independent series cosmos. It’s about Sophie Tomkins. With Duff as Sophie, Disney relies on an established star as the heroine right from the start.

The old narrator Sophie is played by Kim Cattrall (“Sex and the City”), who sits on the couch drinking wine and tells her son about the first meeting with his father in a video call.

Series with the zeitgeist of millennials

The concept has been successful before. The woman, when Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) finally meets the woman for life, occupied fans of the US sitcom «How I Met Your Mother» (2005-2014) for nine seasons. While the life of the original clique around Ted, Barney, Marshall, Lily and Robin took place mainly at New York bars and parties, the adaptation takes into account the zeitgeist of the millennials: everything from Tinder to Uber rides is included.

In terms of diversity, a lot has changed compared to its predecessor. One of the main characters, Ellen, is a lesbian and divorced. Sophie’s best friend and roommate Valentina has Mexican roots. So the new series comes closer to the diversity in real city life. Plus, Sophie’s quest for love doesn’t seem as desperate as Ted Mosby’s.

Although Sophie as a photographer would rather devote herself to art than wedding parties, she appears self-confident, humorous and independent. Friendships are always in the foreground, she is approachable and optimistic.

Appearance of “Gossip Girl” star Leighton Meester

In addition to the two Hollywood greats Duff and Cattrell, Chris Lowell (“Inventing Anna”) and Suraj Sharma (“Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger”) are also there. Series fans also get their money’s worth: “Gossip Girl” star Leighton Meester has a cameo appearance in one episode. Despite the new cast, there are similarities to the previous cult series. For example, two characters live in the same apartment where the heroes of the original series lived.

The hit series “How I Met Your Mother” was first broadcast in Germany on ProSieben and can still be seen there from Monday to Friday. The sequel has been running on the Disney streaming platform since this week. All ten episodes of the first season are available immediately. It remains to be seen whether the follow-up series will have nine seasons like the original. She’s always entertaining.
