A young woman hangs dead in a tree in Lütetsburg Castle Park, hanging from ropes – apparently she was the victim of a cruel violent crime. Suspicion falls on ex-prisoner Dieter Meuling (Anton Noori), who had a love affair with the young woman. Meuling is arrested. Shortly thereafter, his lawyer reports with explosive information. Meuling found out from his former cellmate who killed Ann Kathrin Klaasen’s (Julia Jentsch) father. He would tell her the name if the inspector helped him escape.

Elementary school teacher Katja (Nadja Uhl) leads a full life: she loves her husband Thomas (Thomas Limpinsel) and has a good relationship with her daughter Leonie (Amelie Herres). However, Katja’s world falters when she spends a weekend alone in her farmhouse. The trigger is the freedom-loving journalist Daniel (Carlo Ljubek), an unusual guy passing through. For seven years he has been living out of a backpack and roaming the world. Katja is drawn to his unconventional charm. Without further ado, she allows Daniel to pitch his tent in the garden at her house.

The once celebrated stock exchange genius Piet N. Schneller (Heino Ferch) finds it difficult to bake small rolls as a Hartz IV recipient. Under pressure from his case manager Runknagel (Philipp Hochmair), Piet reluctantly accepts a driver’s job at the Hamburger Tafel. On his first day he surprisingly meets his ex-girlfriend Veronika (Tanja Wedhorn) at the food distribution for the needy. In order not to show any weaknesses in front of the love of his life, Piet switches back to the successful type. Although Veronika soon finds out how he really is, she gets involved in the game and accepts his invitation to dinner.
