The 9-euro ticket in combination with the long weekend has pushed the train and some local transport companies to their limits. This was not only a burden for the travellers.

The ongoing discount campaign in German local transport is putting workers under pressure, according to union information.

“The 9-euro ticket over Pentecost brought the employees to the limit,” said Martin Burkert, Vice-Chairman of the Railway and Transport Union on Tuesday. “The biggest problems at the weekend were, as expected, overcrowded trains, taking bicycles and enforcing the mask requirement.” However, many travelers had shown solidarity with employees.

The union demanded sustained investment in buses and trains. “It must not remain a flash in the pan from the 9-euro ticket,” Burkert demanded. “Pentecost has already shown that local rail passenger transport is accepted by the people.”
