The electric Ioniq 5 was a big hit for Hyundai. Now the busy Koreans are adding the Ioniq 6 sedan. Can he please like his little brother?
While at the premiere of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, almost everything revolved around the bold, retro-style design in addition to the innovative drive technology, the Ioniq 6 looks a little different. The model of the upper middle class also wants to score with an eye-catching design, but does not impose any similarities to historic Hyundai models. The styling is more than striking, but the arched roof line with the steeply sloping rear is only known from vehicles of significantly smaller classes. In addition, the overhangs are short, the wheelbase is long and the side line is much more rounded than you would expect from vehicles of this size. Together with the obligatory double spoiler in the style of a VW Beetle and the digital cameras instead of normal exterior mirrors, the lines ensure an impressively low drag value of 0.21, which should have a beneficial effect on range, wind noise and top speed. It’s no wonder that those responsible at Hyundai call the Ioniq 6, which was developed on the E-GMP platform, an “aerodynamic streamliner”. Visual similarities to the Hyundai Prophecy four-door coupe study shown in 2020 are not surprising.
Inside the Hyundai 6 there is plenty of space for passengers both front and rear and a very flat floor. The driver and the other occupants each look at twelve-inch instruments and a screen. As with the Ioniq 5, the bigger brother of the Ioniq 6 is also equipped with electrically adjustable comfort seats at the front, which are intended to increase the quality of stay inside, especially during longer journeys or charging processes. The customer can choose between ecologically manufactured leather seats or chairs and panels made from recycled PET bottles. Below the two 12-inch screens, the dashboard is traversed by a narrow band of air vents. Below this is a small control panel with the controls for direct functions and the air conditioning.
From the outside, as with the smaller five, the LED light elements in the visible pixel style draw attention to themselves, with the continuous light strip and the narrow brake light in the rear spoiler being particularly pleasing at the rear. Regarding the technical details, Hyundai is holding back on its new model. However, the Ioniq 6 should be available with rear-axle or all-wheel drive and different battery packs. The 800-volt technology is mandatory for the fastest possible charging times. The performance spectrum should be between 300 and 600 hp; the maximum range is well over 500 kilometers to the next charging stop.
