The Red Bull driver was significantly faster than his second-placed team-mate Sergio Perez. Third was Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, almost half a second behind world champion Verstappen. The British Mercedes duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton improved again in fourth and fifth place.

Mick Schumacher achieved a convincing performance in ninth place in the Haas. Sebastian Vettel had to settle for twelfth place in the Aston Martin.

Before the tenth round of the season in Great Britain on Sunday (4 p.m. / RTL and Sky), defending champion Verstappen is at the top of the overall standings with a clear lead. The Dutchman has won six of the nine races of the season so far. World Cup second is Perez ahead of Leclerc.
