It was a memorable moment: Lotte sang a song about her abuse experiences on “Sing mein Song” – and had to break off in tears. The other artists were also moved.

The fact that tears flow is a tradition with “Sing mein Song”. Music is a highly emotional art and goes straight to the heart. As a performer or listener, you can get teary-eyed over a harmless love song.

It was different on Tuesday: Watching it took your breath away, your throat tightened. The focus of the fifth show of the current season was the work of the singer-songwriter Lotte. And that brought “So wie ich” to be heard – a song about sexual abuse.

The 26-year-old uses it to process her own experiences. The musician from Lake Constance made that clear: “I want to talk about it because it’s the only way to change something.”

“Sing my song”: Lotte sings about an experience

There was silence in the group when Lotte finally got on the stage and started her song. But she couldn’t finish it. She cried as she sang. In one line she addressed the perpetrator directly: “What did that do to you? Were you still awake? You asked yourself: What did you do wrong? Like me, like me, like me”.

The haunting lyrics didn’t leave the fellow musicians cold either. Several of those present had to cry, and otherwise very strong emotions came up: “I’m so angry, I’m so fucking angry,” said Floor Jansen.

Lotte herself worked through this bad experience. Has undergone therapy, has “become the boss in her own life again,” as she says, and has started to love herself more.

It started out harmless

It went pretty low for a harmless entertainment show. The evening started harmlessly and cheerfully at first: Kelvin Jones opened the evening with “More of it”, Floor Jansen followed her version of “Walls”, in which she was able to fully exploit her vocal qualities. Clueso sang about the failure of first love in Too Young. And Elif surprised in her interpretation of “On Both Legs” with a rap interlude in which she reflected on her relationship with her own parents.

Then came Lotte’s own song, already described, which visibly affected those present. The mood didn’t get any better when Johannes Oerding started working on “Dunkelrot zu Schwarz”. Tears flowed again from several of those present – they were so touched by his haunting singing.

Shortly before the end of the evening the mood was on the ground. But one act was still missing: SDP got the whole group dancing with their NDW version of “Fuck Baby I’m in Love” and let those present laugh into the night. There was something almost therapeutic about it: as if the artists wanted to shake the pain and grief out of themselves.

The band is the star

It was only logical that Dag-Alexis Kopplin grabbed the flower for the best performance of the evening. Because Lotte didn’t want to single out anyone present, she let chance decide and threw the flower as if it were a bridal bouquet.

Kopplin passed the award on to Grosch’s Eleven, the band that has provided the sound for nine seasons. The unsung heroes of “Sing meine Song” got the honor they deserved for the first time in the history of this show. It was the fitting end to an extraordinary evening.

“Sing my song” is always on Tuesdays at 8:15 p.m. on Vox. The current episode can also be streamed on RTL.
