In Cannes, the world’s most important mobile communications trade fair was once bursting at the seams, and since 2006 the MWC industry get-together has been taking place in Barcelona. This is where it is to be aligned over the next few years.
The most important mobile trade fair MWC will continue to take place in Barcelona until at least 2030. The industry association GSMA agreed on this with the city of Barcelona and the responsible local organizations, as the GSMA announced on Monday.
The current contract ends in 2024. “Recent global developments have presented the MWC with major challenges and the strength of our partners (in Barcelona) was crucial in enabling us to host the fair again,” GSMA Director General Mats Granryd wrote in the statement . “Excellent news,” wrote Spain’s Economy Minister Nadia Calviño on Twitter.
At the beginning of the 2020 corona pandemic, the mobile communications trade fair was one of the first major international events to be cancelled. The fair took place again this year, but “only” with 60,000 visitors from 200 countries. Before the pandemic, more than 100,000 industry insiders and journalists attended MWC in Barcelona.
