The Swiss became number one in the world tennis rankings in 1997 and stayed at the top for 209 weeks. Interview: Sabine Hoffmann

At the French Open in 1999 you delivered a spectacular final with Steffi Graf. You were number one in the world at the time and just two points away from victory. Would you like a rematch?

Of course I would have liked to have given myself a revenge. Unfortunately, that was no longer possible. André Agassi was faster than me. Shortly after that game, she ended her career and married him.

The 1990s are considered the golden era of tennis. Are you still friends with some of the players?

Yes, at my wedding in 2018 I even had a French Open table. There sat Mary Pierce and Iva Majoli. Both won the tournament: Iva beat me in the 1997 final, Mary 2000 in the semifinals. In the same year we won in doubles.
