Polestar has released an image of the 3, the first SUV and third model from the Volvo luxury electric brand. The Polestar 3 comes with a long range and the function for autonomous driving. He is to make the beginning of a series of new vehicle models.

With the Polestar 3, the Swedish electric car manufacturer is expanding its vehicle range with an SUV model. After he published a car under a fabric cover and one with camouflage film a few months ago, a first picture now shows the SUV in side view. A long wheelbase and a slightly sloping roof line, which visually resembles the related Volvo C40 Recharge, are striking. In addition, a low-drawn front can be seen.

The third model from the luxury electric brand is set to celebrate its world premiere in October. A few details have now become known. This is how the 3 with dual engine and all-wheel drive should appear. In addition, the joint venture between Volvo and its Chinese mother Geely states a range of over 600 kilometers according to WLTP. However, Polestar has not yet provided any information on the battery type or its capacity.

At a later date, the SUV will enable autonomous driving on the highway with the help of a LiDAR sensor and centralized computing power from the chip developer Nvidia – and thus level three driver assistance functions.

“Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age. Our design identity evolves with this large, high-end luxury electric vehicle with a strong, individual brand character,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar in a press release. “With this vehicle, we’re bringing ‘sportiness’ back to the SUV, true to our performance roots.” Ingenlath spoke of an “important milestone”.

What that means in concrete terms for the engine performance of the new model remains unclear. However, the 3 will probably not be locked at a speed of 180 km/h like the Volvo models and will instead be able to drive at speeds of over 200 km/h just like the Polestar 2. In addition, the carmaker should also rely on recycled materials in the interior.

Polestar 3: Production in China and for the first time in the USA

The SUV will be built in China and the USA. This makes it the first Polestar model to be produced in North America. The expected start of production is planned for early 2023. Orders should also be possible on the day of the world premiere in October.

Polestar plans to launch a new vehicle every year for the next three years, starting with the 3. The Polestar 4, a smaller, electric performance SUV coupe, is to follow next year.

The company, which was only founded in 2017, aims to expand its business to at least 30 markets worldwide by the end of 2030. At the same time, the automaker wants to increase sales tenfold – from around 29,000 vehicles in 2021 to around 290,000 vehicles by the end of 2025.
