There are new technical problems at Twitter, external links did not work. “We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences,” the company said.

Extensive technical disruptions occurred on Twitter on Monday. “Some parts of Twitter may not work as expected at this time,” Twitter support wrote on the short message platform. The technical problems were apparently caused by the technical department itself, which had been greatly reduced in terms of personnel due to several waves of layoffs. “We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences,” the Twitter support tweet said.

Most Twitter content works

For a number of users, the content on the twitter.com website still appeared as usual. However, photos and videos embedded in tweets were not displayed correctly. The links in the tweets did not work for users like the network activist Markus Beckedahl. Twitter support said they are working on fixing the bug and will release an update when the bug is fixed.

There have been repeated technical problems on Twitter since it was taken over by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk. Musk took over Twitter in October for the equivalent of around 41 billion euros. The boss of the electric car manufacturer Tesla and the aerospace company SpaceX immediately fired the top management of the short message service and a week later around half of the then 7500 employees.

To save further costs, the multi-billionaire continued the layoffs. Many technicians were also affected. Experts have repeatedly warned that the wave of layoffs could endanger the smooth functioning of the platform – up to and including a possible collapse of Twitter.
