More and more European countries are reporting monkeypox infections. It is unusual for the virus to spread here. How do experts assess the danger?

Initially only Great Britain was affected, but now several European countries are reporting cases of monkeypox, which most people in this country may not have heard of. So far there are around 90 confirmed and more than 50 suspected cases in 13 countries worldwide. In Germany, too, a person fell ill with monkeypox – a 26-year-old from Brazil.

The emergence of this virus in individual populations around the world where it does not normally occur has alarmed scientists. Now they go in search of answers.
