Cannes is currently all about “Top Gun: Maverick”. It took a long time for a sequel to be filmed. That was because of the main actor.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise (59) has not felt ready for a sequel to “Top Gun” for a long time.

Immediately after the release of the blockbuster in 1986, those responsible wanted to shoot a sequel, he said in Cannes. “I said: I don’t want to do it, I have to grow as an artist, I have to understand what cinema is and I know what I don’t know.”

Decades later, the time had finally come – and Cruise slipped back into the role of former fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell for “Top Gun: Maverick”. The screening of Joseph Kosinski’s blockbuster on Wednesday evening is one of the highlights of the Cannes Film Festival.

In the afternoon, songs from the film’s soundtrack resounded through the streets in front of the Festspielhaus. Many people held up signs in search of tickets. “Top Gun: Maverick” will start in German cinemas on May 26th.
