In Germany, people with a lot of money decide over those who have to live with far too little. And far too many have prejudices about poverty and work. There is a solution, even a very simple one: more money.

I lived below the poverty line for five years. That wasn’t bad at all! I ate 50 cent pasta, drank 50 cent beer and paid 150 euros for a shared room. I was a student. Even if this life had bothered me, I knew: I’ll soon graduate and have a job, and then my meager life will be over.

13.4 million people in our rich country live below the poverty line. And unlike students, there is no end in sight for most of them.

“They should work!” shout those who have work.

“Anyone who wants to can find work!” shout those who are healthy.
