It’s hay fever high season – and this year it’s particularly bad for people with pollen allergies: why, whether masks help and why it can make sense to go to the doctor.

Why is hay fever so bad right now?

Two things are coming together this year: in contrast to the severe summer droughts at the turn of the decade, there was already a severe drought in the spring. As with all types of dust, pollen floats best in dry air. Drafts, caused by wind, but also by traffic, whirl them up again on top of that. As a result, pollen allergy sufferers have now been exposed to a particularly high dose of pollen for weeks. There is also a special feature in the growth cycle of trees.
