The 34-year-old from Bad Saulgau defeated the Australian qualifier Astra Sharma 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 and provided the first German sense of achievement on Tuesday. Andrea Petkovic and the Wimbledon debutants Nastasja Schunk and Daniel Altmaier, on the other hand, were eliminated right at the start.

Maria had to put in an extra shift in her first round game. The game of the mother of two was interrupted when the score was 1: 1 on Monday due to darkness, and she managed the decisive break to 4: 3 in the third round.

Petkovic, Schunk and Altmaier out

Petkovic lost 4:6, 3:6 against Viktorija Golubic from Switzerland. The 34-year-old from Darmstadt gave up the serve four times on the lawn she didn’t love much and made too many minor mistakes throughout the game.

In her Wimbledon debut, the 18-year-old Schunk clearly lost to the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu 4: 6, 2: 6. The woman from Leimen had fought her way into the main draw for the first time with three two-set victories in the qualification. At the French Open, Schunk was also eliminated in the first round.

Altmaier’s game against Swede Mikael Ymer was interrupted on Monday evening when the score was 0: 2 from the 23-year-old Kempener’s point of view because of darkness. Altmaier couldn’t improve on the sequel either and lost 3:6, 5:7, 5:7.

On the first day of the Wimbledon tournament, Angelique Kerber, Jule Niemeier, Oscar Otte and Maximilian Marterer progressed.
