It’s been a good six months since Ghislaine Maxwell was found guilty in New York. Judge Alison J. Nathan has now announced the sentence.

Ghislaine Maxwell has been in prison for two years now. In December last year, a New York jury found the British woman guilty of child sex trafficking. Her sentence has now been announced.

Ghislaine Maxwell: That’s how long she has to go to prison

The accomplice of the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. The victims of Epstein and Maxwell were heard in court for the last time. Several of them had sent in so-called “victim statements” describing the crimes committed by the British woman. Victims were also present in the courtroom. Maxwell was supported by three of her siblings.

The prosecution has called for a prison sentence of between 30 and 55 years for the 60-year-old, but her lawyers tried to the last to portray Maxwell as a victim. She is a “scapegoat” because Epstein committed suicide before his trial. They demanded a prison sentence of less than 20 years for their client and justified this with their past, among other things. They argued that Maxwell’s “traumatic childhood with a domineering, narcissistic and demanding father” made her “vulnerable to Epstein.” The verdict turned out to be quite mild, considering the demands of the public prosecutor’s office. For the first time in this trial, Maxwell spoke out herself. She reports that it was difficult for her to hear the victims’ accounts, then she expressed remorse: “I recognize your suffering, I have empathy, I deeply regret it pain you have endured.” But she also sees herself as a victim of the manipulative Epstein and said: “I regret the day I met him.”

Found guilty on five counts

The Brit was charged with six counts, including seducing a minor into illegal sex acts and perjury. She was found guilty on five counts, including the most serious charge: “human trafficking of minors for abuse purposes”. During the first hearing, she denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty. Jeffrey Epstein was sentenced to 13 months in prison in 2008 for the sexual abuse of minors and has since been listed as a sex criminal. A month after being arrested again, he was found dead in his prison cell in August 2019.
