Queen Elizabeth II (96) opened the Platinum Jubilee Party on Saturday (June 4) – together with another British icon: Paddington Bear. The Queen showcased her comedic and acting talents in a pre-taped skit that was reportedly aired for attendees at the Buckingham Palace concert in London.
The Queen and Paddington Bear meet in the clip for tea, which the bear drinks straight from the pot. “Maybe you’d like a jam sandwich,” Paddington offers afterwards, pulling one out of his hat. “I always have one for emergencies.” The Queen replies, “Me too. I’ll keep mine here for later” – and pulls a sandwich out of her famous purse. “Happy anniversary, ma’am,” Paddington says at the end. “And thanks for everything.” To which the Queen replies, “That’s very kind.”
“It was just too funny”
A spokesman for the palace said of the comedy, according to People: “Her Majesty is known for her sense of humor, so it should come as no surprise that she decided to take part in tonight’s skit.” The opportunity to “invite a famous bear to tea was just too fun to pass up”.
The Queen previously made an acclaimed acting appearance at the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. A skit, seen by more than a billion television viewers worldwide, was shown just before the Queen’s arrival at the Olympic Stadium. Viewers saw Daniel Craig (54), alias 007, arrive at Buckingham Palace and the Queen greeted him with the words: “Good evening, Mr. Bond.”
In the final scene of the video, two stunt people dressed as Queen and Bond parachuted into the stadium from a helicopter. Minutes later, the real queen arrived at her seat at the stadium in the same dress as the stuntwoman.
Party at the palace with George and Charlotte
The band Queen Adam Lambert (40) opened the big concert for the platinum throne jubilee at Buckingham Palace on Saturday. Stars like Alicia Keys (41), Duran Duran, Rod Stewart (77), Andrea Bocelli (63) and Diana Ross (78) were also there. The Queen herself was not there, but Prince William (39), Duchess Kate (40) and her two children Prince George (8) and Princess Charlotte (7) were among them.
