Researchers have increasingly sophisticated methods to find out what appeals to us about sugar, and the photographer Jan von Holleben has also dealt with the subject of sweets in his work.

Excited, almost euphoric, the visitors streamed into the gallery, especially the children, says Jan von Holleben. The Berlin photographer recently opened his “SugarWow” exhibition at the environmental photo festival in Zingst on the Baltic Sea. It leads the viewer through a sugar wonderland, over rampant meadows with blossoms of fizzy UFOs and liquorice. Shows people covered in gummy bears and sprinkles; Shower heads, tape rollers, jewellery, glasses, vegetables – a cosmos of carbohydrates.
