The actor had to prepare long and hard for his new film. He plays a fighter pilot in it.

Preparing for his role as fighter pilot Rooster in the action film Top Gun: Maverick has been a challenge for actor Miles Teller.

“I can’t say I enjoyed it,” Teller admitted to the German Press Agency in London. “I enjoyed some of it. But you shouldn’t underestimate how much it puts a strain on the body,” said the 35-year-old, who boarded a jet weekly for a year. More than three decades after the cinema success of “Top Gun” with Tom Cruise, the story of the breakneck pilot Maverick is continued. Theatrical release is on Thursday (May 26).

Teller and the other actors, including lead actor Tom Cruise, undertook several months of intense pre-shooting to get used to the G-forces felt in a fighter jet. “There were certainly moments that I enjoyed,” Teller said, “but there were also moments where I couldn’t wait to get back on solid ground.”

The film pilots were not allowed to steer the F18 fighter jets themselves. “The Navy didn’t let us do that, but we sat in these jets a lot and pretended to fly them,” Teller said. “I think Tom tried, but they didn’t even allow Tom Cruise to fly an F18.”
